27th August 05

We have had heavy rain for most of the last fortnight which has made everything grow again. The garden is starting to recover from the drought of July. Amazingly, as it's a Bank Holiday, the sun has come out today.

Heather out on the bank
White cat on the belvedere
Verbena, mallow, cannas, hybiscus...
The banks have changed to purples and reds (fuchsias and salvias)
The fennel is HUGE!
The bed in the wall by the big lawn is looking quite glorious
The steps up to the big lawn
Canna
One of the many dahlias which look so splendid at this time of year.  I'm going to lead a movement to get dahlias back into fashion.
The Pigeon's Tale
On Monday, a homing/racing pigeon arrived on the balcony where Elizabeth feeds the wild birds. It returned everyday. So we found out the phone number of the local pigeon fancier. He told us to "first catch your pigeon" which we managed to do by luring it into the cat basket with some cooked rice. We then took it to the pigeon-man who looked at the address printed on every feather of its wings (yep, true) and found that it belonged to someone in Poole. It will now be reunited with its owner.
