4th May - Halong Bay

Halong Bay, now a World Heritage Site, consists of thousands of islands. As the Silver Shadow anchored in the bay, we took a trip around them in a junk.

Many of the islands have names...this one is the "Devil's Face".
Depending on which guidebook you read, Halong Bay has between 2000 and 3000 islands
 
We had a very leisurely trip on a junk 
Fishing boats in the harbour. Most of the people live on their boats.
These pictures of houses in Halong City, surrounding the harbour, might soon be very different. Amazingly, they are building a road on stilts in front of them! Indeed the whole seafront is to be replaced with tourist hotels and villas. As the tourists arrive, this old way of life will change forever.
