21st Mar 07 - Castle Crag
After seeing the BBC4 Wainwright walk on Castle
Crag, we just had to do it as our first walk. Also it was the most wonderful
cold but brilliantly sunny day. PURRFECT!
About 5.5 miles and 1000ft.
The white houses at Grange where we started the walk. |
The River Derwent at Dalt Wood. Skies do NOT get bluer than that! |
Our target - Castle Crag. About 970ft. Reminds me of something from Close Encounters... |
If
a visitor to Lakeland has only two or three hours to spare, poor fellow,
yet desperately wants to reach a summit and take back an enduring memory
of the beauty and atmosphere of the district...let him climb Castle
Crag. Alfred Wainwright Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells - Book Six |
Climbing the last bit to the top over the loose slate. |
The arrangement of stones in the quarry just below the top. |
The "magical" top! |
Even
today, one man in possession, armed with a stick, could prevent its
occupation by others whatever their number, there being one strategic
point
(the access to the top) where passage upward is restricted to single-file traffic. Alfred Wainwright Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells - Book Six |
Looking over Borrowdale from the top |
In
the author's humble submission, it encloses the loveliest square
mile in Lakeland...the Jaws of Borrowdale. Alfred Wainwright Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells - Book Six |
Derwent Water from the top of Castle Crag. MAGIC! |
The view from the top over the arranged stones (see above) |
