15th Aug 04 - The Hundreds
A superb variation on an old theme. Started from Waterhead and climbed
Wansfell (c1600ft). Then we turned left and followed the old wall along the
ridge with its fantastic views over Ambleside and Rydal Water. We were then on
The Hundreds and were able to follow the old Hundreds Road with dry stone walls
on either side. You can imagine the sheep being taken down to lower pastures in
centuries past. The views over Windermere were breathtaking. Then we joined
Robin Lane for the gentle walk back through Skelghyll Wood.
7-8 miles and one of the best!
