9th Feb 07 - Murad-Janjira
Sailed the 220km to Murud in very calm seas.
Transferred first by tender... |
Then into the waiting Hodi boats |
We visited the old coastal fort of Jazira-Mehruba (Moon Fort)... |
...along with a group of Indian school kids. |
Getting off the hodi boat and climbing the steep steps to enter the fort |
The five storey Janjira Palace built by the Siddis - Abyssinian slavers who had prospered in India |
Totally self sufficient - this is the water 'tank' - the 14th C fort has NEVER been captured! |
Indeed, this stone engraving of a lion holding six small elephants captive represents the six successive Siddi victories. |
The Indians do not have the funds to restore the place |
