4th August - Narsarsuaq
Narsarsuaq, on the west coast of Greenland, has a population of just 160 and is situated at the end of a long fjord. It seemed very incongruous to be eating breakfast in a warm cabin whilst looking at icebergs just outside your window!
Tunulliarfik Fjord at dawn |
We had to land at Narsarsuaq by tender from Seven Seas Navigator |
We went on a c5 mile trek along the aptly named Flower Valley (Blomsterdalen). This was all formed by the Kuussuup Sermia glacier which has now retreated |
This is the Willow-herb - the national flower of Greenland...and a lot of lichen |
Suddenly you come over the hill and see this fantastic glacier valley ("Old Woman's Belly") in front of you |
The valley is covered in lush grass...VERY wet to walk through! |
Then you reach the banks of the river running white from the melting glacier |
In the 1950s the Americans built a hospital in this remote site - apparently to treat the worst injured from the Korean War so their return did not affect morale at home... It burnt down and this chimney is all that is left. |
We left in the afternoon sailing back down Tunulliarfik (or Eric the Red's) Fjord to the open sea...surrounded by icebergs |
