22nd March 19 - Yangon
First morning spent on train ride to local market. Then a visit to the Shwedagon Pagoda which contains the relics of no fewer than four Buddhas.
| We were told this was one of the newer trains... |
| Our disembarkation station to visit one of the local markets. |
| Bananas and dried fish |
| Loads of manual sewing machines with seamstresses running you up any garment you wish... |
| SHWEDAGON PAGODA |
| As the sign says, first we all had to remove our shoes and socks. Must admit my feet were black by the end of the visit! |
The Shwedagon Pagoda is huge and towers over
everything in the city. It apparently houses the relics of no less than four
buddhas. Over 60 tons of gold were used! |
| Very crowded as many come in the evening when it is cooler |
| More statues of Buddha than you could count |
| There were eight stations according to day of the week on which you were born. Eight because Wednesday morning and afternoon count as a day. Our guide was born on Wednesday morning and was therefore an Elephant with tusks. He went to wash his Buddha. |
| Elizabeth was born on a Thursday which makes her a MOUSE. Can you believe that? |
| The biggest reclining Buddha in the Temple |
| Me |
| Lovely looking kids everywhere |
| These little novice Buddhist Monks were chanting a prayer |
| We made an offering and bought a candle |
| If you couldn't afford an offering you could do sweeping! |
| Just a few of the golden stupas |
| SUNSET by the time we left |
