24th Dec 16 - Cosa Maya, Mexico
Mayan ruins at Chacchoben. About an hour's drive from the pier. Started sunny then poured with rain at the very end! But we had an excellent guide - so v interesting.
The Mayan ruins at Chacchoben date from 250-900AD. Many have still to be excavated. |
The foundations for one of the many houses found on the site. You can see how easily the ruins have been taken over by the undergrowth and trees. |
Indeed the vegetation was lush |
We had a great guide - Andrei. Here pointing out that the ruins had once been painted red. |
He also had a selection of objects carved from the hard seeds of the trees we were looking at. Including one that had an oil that could be burned like a candle. |
Finally Elizabeth & I on the steps of one of the ruins. |
