20th Oct 15 - Naples, Italy
Too rough for the tenders in Sorrento so diverted to Naples. It was pouring with rain - not the best way to explore a City! So we went on the Napoli Sotterranea 1.5hr tour.
The Greeks originally built the tunnels. Then the Romans expanded them and turned them into a water storage system. Then cholera struck and they were closed and used as a garbage tip. In the war they were cleared out and used as air raid shelters. Fascinating!
Not for the claustrophobic as you had to squeeze through v narrow tunnels. Not for the unfit either with its hundreds of steps!
Typical Naples street. Very narrow and full of litter and beggars... |

One of the entrances to the underground tunnels is via a private house which had an exhibition of Naples street scenes. Indeed there were many shops selling these! |
Typical street in Pisa |
Love this photo of the old buildings reflected in the River Arno. |
