7th Nov 11 - Alexandria, Eygpt

We had a quiet day off in Port Said after the exertions of Jerusalem. But today we arrived in Alexandria, Egypt and went for a trip to see the Roman ruins. But it was the trip there that was far more interesting!

Talk about a 'City of Contrasts'. This was the view from our balcony with the old yacht and beautiful buildings
But turn the camera a few degrees and you get these awful tenement buildings
The streets were full of rubbish and the odd dead animal (it was Eid yesterday)
Everyone was very friendly and pleased to see us (or sell us something...)
The streets were almost impossible to navigate with bazaars everywhere
My fetish for washing lines was easily satiated!
Pompey's Pillar erected in 297AD and part of the Temple of Serapis
The catacombs of Kom Al-Shooafa. c200AD. No cameras were allowed so I had to steal these from the web. Very impressive it was too!
