7th Nov 11 - Alexandria, Eygpt
We had a quiet day off in Port Said after the exertions of Jerusalem. But today we arrived in Alexandria, Egypt and went for a trip to see the Roman ruins. But it was the trip there that was far more interesting!
Talk about a 'City of Contrasts'. This was the view from our balcony with the old yacht and beautiful buildings |
But turn the camera a few degrees and you get these awful tenement buildings |
The streets were full of rubbish and the odd dead animal (it was Eid yesterday) |
Everyone was very friendly and pleased to see us (or sell us something...) |
The streets were almost impossible to navigate with bazaars everywhere |
My fetish for washing lines was easily satiated! |
Pompey's Pillar erected in 297AD and part of the Temple of Serapis |
The catacombs of Kom Al-Shooafa. c200AD. No cameras were allowed so I had to steal these from the web. Very impressive it was too! |
The Roman theatre |
