6th Sept 06 - Rhodes
Rhodes is a fantastic walled medieval city in remarkably good
nick.
At dawn from our balcony as we edged into the harbour of Rhodes Town |
First stop was the Acropolis of Rhodes with its Temple of Apollo. |
We then went walkabout in the medieval city. This is the Street of the Knights which leads from the Palace of the Grand Master. |
One of the many beautiful Roman mosaics on the floor of the Palace of the Grand Master |
Some streets in Rhodes are very quaint and picturesque... |
...others are typically touristy! I should point out that it was VERY HOT. I reckon 40C |
This
is the site of the Colossus of Rhodes - one of the Seven Wonders of the
World (two in one week now!) The Statue of Zeus statue, which made up the Colossus was said to have had its feet on either side of the harbour entrance where the two columns, with the deer on top, now stand. It was destroyed in an earthquake. However, the watercolour below gives a rather different impression! |
Another view of the walled city from the harbourside |
