16th Dec 10 - Buenos Aires
We hired a guide from www.ba-walking-tours.com for a private six hour walk. It was well worth it.
The view from our 19th floor room at the Park Tower overlooking San Martin and the clock tower given by Britain to Argentina 100 years ago |
Jacaranda trees in the park |
With 1m 'servants' employed in BA, dog walking is for the maid not the owner! |
Under the branches of a 300 yr old fig tree |
Recoleta Park. Many signs remain of the English connection. Like the red phone boxes. |
Entrance to the Recoleta Cemetery - The City of the Dead. Agapanthus everywhere. |
Street after street of the most ornate tombs |
Some with the most ornate statuary |
Some have stories. Here a girl was told that her husband was having an affair with her mother. She had a fit (not surprisingly) and they thought she had died. So they put her in a coffin and took her to the tomb. Several days later they found the coffin tipped over. After opening it they found the poor girl had been trying to claw her way out... |
Here a girl was killed in an avalanche on her honeymoon. Her husband (who survived) erected this memorial to her with her pet dog. |
The most famous 'resident' of the cemetery is, of course, Eva Peron. "Don't cry for me Argentina..." |
Plaza Mayo. Typical wide avenues |
A street in Caminito. Corrugated iron shacks painted in bright colours. |
I particularly liked this 'false' window |
