24th Dec 16 - Cosa Maya, Mexico

Mayan ruins at Chacchoben. About an hour's drive from the pier. Started sunny then poured with rain at the very end! But we had an excellent guide - so v interesting.

The Mayan ruins at Chacchoben date from 250-900AD. Many have still to be excavated.
The foundations for one of the many houses found on the site. You can see how easily the ruins have been taken over by the undergrowth and trees.
Indeed the vegetation was lush
We had a great guide - Andrei. Here pointing out that the ruins had once been painted red.
He also had a selection of objects carved from the hard seeds of the trees we were looking at. Including one that had an oil that could be burned like a candle.
Finally Elizabeth & I on the steps of one of the ruins.
