16th Sept 16 - Syracuse and Ortygia

Docked at Catania, Sicily. Took trip to Syracuse and Ortygia.

The Greek Theatre at Syracuse. Could seat 18,000.

The Ear of Dionysius. A limestone cave shaped like an ear that has been excavated as part of the Greek quarry around the Theatre.

The Cathedral of Syracuse based on the Greek Temple of Athena built 500BC. Indeed you can still see the Doric columns dating from that period forming the walls of the cathedral. The cathedral was built around the temple in the 7th Century and the current facade about 300 years ago.
