19th May 15 - Galapagos Day Four

Up early for a long hike (before the sun got too hot) and then a zodiac trip

Hike Caleta Tagus, Isabela
Landed by zodiac in Caleta Tagus. Used to be an important bay for ships to anchor. Indeed Charles Darwin landed at this precise spot on 29th Sept 1835 as recorded in his famous 'Voyage of the Beagle'.
Started hike upwards...
Lovely view of the lake and bay beyond.
On 29th Sept 1835 Charles Darwin wrote 'The day was overpoweringly hot and the lake looked clear and blue. I hurried down the cindery slope and choked with dust eagerly tasted the water - but to my sorry I found it salt as brine'.
This flycatcher just demanded to have its photo taken. Darwin noted how unafraid of humans the birds were. Certainly true even now.
View from the summit across the volcanic plains to Wolf Volcano that you can see in the distance. They do erupt even now. Last was in 2009.
During lunch the ship moved to Bahia Elizabeth, Isabela where we took to the zodiacs again
First stop was this rocky outcrop with penguins, cormorants, blue footed boobies and a sea lion
Specifically this Galapagos penguin and her youngster.
I can't decide which of these penguin photos is best...
But I am proudest of this shot of the baby penguin with the blue footed boobies
Then on to the mangrove swamps
Came across this beautiful ray
Some serious photographers on this trip. Here with the heron posing.
