20th May 14 Kiel Canal

We left Amsterdam through a lock.

The kiel Canal was opened in 1895 linking the North Sea to the Baltic. Only ships as small the Silver Whisper can transit the canal. Others have to take the long and often rough trip around the coast.
A lock at either end of the sixty mile canal. It was a tight fit!
The scenery along the canal is very beautiful. Everyone waved and shouted at us from the banks as we sat on our balcony with a glass of Chablis.
This is the Rendsburg Bridge which has an aerial ferry suspended by steel ropes. The only one in Europe.
