2nd Aug 10 - Bigland Tarn

Started dull then sunshine!

this 7+ miler walk starts at Greenodd - although if I was planning it again I'd centre it on Haverthwaite as the 2mile walk (there AND back) along the tarmaced Cumbria Coastal Way is a bit monotonous.

But the climb through the woods to Bigland Tarn and then on to Hard Crag is superb. Wondrous views in every direction. Walk back along the River Levens is also good.

The old bridge across the River Levens at Low Wood.
Bigland Tarn was one of those rare totally deserted, peaceful spots. Made even better as that's when the sun decided to come out!
The path from bigland Tarn up to Hard Crag and the pool at Back Reddings was also a joy
The old gunpowder works needed to supply the many quarries and mines in the late 18th and 19th centuries.
