27th-30th November 2008 - Berlin with Mike & Mo
Weekend away in Berlin with Mike &
Mo. stayed at the Kempinski Hotel Bristol (excellent and good room rate deal on
the internet!).
Weather was freezing!
| On
the first day we did a guided walking tour of all the main sights in both
East and West Berlin - about 5 hours. Berliner Dom on Museum Island |
|
| The holocaust monument | |
| The secret underground station - Unter den Linden. Closed until unification even though the tube trains continued to run through it. | |
| Brandenburg Gate | |
| Reichstag and its new dome designed by Sir Norman Foster | |
| One of the last remaining bits of the Berlin Wall | |
| The unique 'traffic light man' as used in East Berlin. The West Berliners liked it so much that it is now been installed in the Western bits of Berlin too! | |
| Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedachtnis-Kirche is a bombed out church left as a monument to the futility of war. On Kurfurstendamm - close to our hotel | |
| Christ above the altar in Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedachtnis-Kirche | |
| Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedachtnis-Kirche by night | |
| The same view up Kurfurstendamm at night | |
| Gendarmenmarkt 'one of Berlin's most beautiful squares'. Franzosischer Dom with the Christmas market in front | |
| Enough Christmas decorations for a thousand trees | |
| Christmas markets everywhere. | |
| Potsdam is about a 30 minute drive from Berlin. This is the Schloss Sanssouci and the view from its terrace | |
| Back in Berlin. Charlottenburg at dusk | |
| Charlottenburg at night | |
| In the Christmas market in front of Charlottenburg | |
| Dinner in the Orangery of Charlottenburg | |
| Performance in Charlottenburg of Mozart, Handel and Bach | |
