9th Oct 08 - Beijing Olympics

Docked in Tanjin. The port is c140km from Beijing. It was an amazing motorway. I noticed they had planted new trees 20 deep, 2m apart on both sides of the road. Mature trees 30ft tall. It went the whole length of the motorway. So that's nearly 2 million new trees!

First stop was the site of the Olympics
It was unfortunate that the Birdsnest stadium was closed today!
This zoom picture was the closest we got to the inside
The Aquatic Centre
One of the many hotels that surround the Olympic Complex
We then drove to lunch. This is a typical Beijing street. What was amazing about this city is that we must have seen a hundred streetscapes just like this. Brand new, wide streets with futuristic tower blocks. All the streets were squeaky clean with no beggars.
You might also notice the low visibility caused by the air polution.
Next Stop the Great Wall of China
